Is your running style a pain in the leg?
Have you considered that your aches and pains might be caused simply by the way you run?
Were you aware that by improving your running technique you could increase your pace?
Most of us have never been taught how to run and we certainly underestimate the finer details of this early learnt skill. You only have to look around you to notice that we all have a unique running style – some good, some not so good …
A lot of running styles are energy inefficient and some can predispose to injury.
Where can I go for help and advice?
The University of Bristol Sports Medicine Clinic offers a running analysis and treatment service for all levels of runners. With the use of slow motion video analysis their sports physiotherapists will assess the efficiency of your unique running style, how well your body absorbs the biomechanical forces running creates and whether there is a predisposition to injury.
Who is video running analysis useful for?
Runners who want to ensure their running style is not conducive to injury
Runners looking to improve the effectiveness of their training and race time
Runners with back, hip, knee, ankle or foot pain
Individuals with a family history of foot problems such as ‘flat feet’
Sports men and women in high impact sports such as tennis, football, rugby, hockey, netball etc. where running is an integral part of the game.
How does it work?
The physiotherapist will fully discuss your problem and any relevant history, perform a thorough physical examination and carry out relevant objective tests. A video recording will then be made of you walking and running. With the aid of slow motion play back and freeze framing, it is possible to make an accurate assessment and diagnose any problem areas.
If the problem is significant enough to contribute to current or future pain and injury, your physiotherapist will guide you on a suitable course of action. This usually involves:
Adjustments to running technique
Individually designed exercise drills to stabilise the pelvis, hips, knees, ankles and feet
Expert footwear advice
One of the main advantages of video analysis is that it fully involves the runner in the entire process. With the expert guidance of the physiotherapist all runners can visibly see the pros and cons of their unique style and understand any associated specific problems. Motivation is high using video analysis as improvements in both technique and strength are easily tracked.
Video analysis of movement is used frequently in elite sport. Research shows that even at the highest level, one’s natural talent can only take an athlete so far, and movement analysis can be the difference between a fast and an even faster time or an injury and no injury.
How much does a running analysis cost?
