Penny Brohn Cancer Care
Penny Brohn Cancer Care (formally Bristol Cancer Help Centre) Provides complementary care (The Bristol Approach) to people with cancer, and their loved ones. Working alongside medical treatment, this complementary approach can transform lives – giving people practical tools to improve their daily quality of life and helping to take the fear out of cancer.

Founded more than 26 Years ago, today Penny Brohn Cancer Care supports many thousands of people affected by cancer through a range of therapeutic courses and information services. The Charity continues to set the standard in complementary cancer care and has the backing of leading oncologists, healthcare professional and complementary therapists.

Why we changed.
Although our name has changed, we still retain our connection to Bristol, as the Bristol Approach is still our core offering – supporting people physically and spiritually through a range of therapeutic and information courses.

The Association of Children’s Hospices

It’s every parent’s worst fear to be told their child will die before them. But for an estimated 20,000 families across the UK this is a reality. In most cases full-time care falls to the parents – 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Not surprisingly the whole family is under huge emotional, physical and financial strain.

Children’s hospice services offer a lifeline to these families. They welcome the family for a break together in a home-from-home environment, or, if they prefer, in the comfort of their own home, sharing in the care of the child, providing essential respite from the 24 hour care routine. And, when the time comes, they can provide end of life care, helping the family and child to meet death with dignity and peace.

ACH is the voice of children’s hospice services in the UK. We work hard to ensure that every child has access to a children’s hospice that’s able to offer them the best possible care available. Please run for us so we can continue to help life-limited children and their families make the most of every precious moment.

Join the ACH running team: together we can ensure that children who won’t live to reach adulthood – and their families – continue to get help for every step of their journey.

“The Association of Children’s Hospices (ACH) is absolutely delighted to be chosen as the official national charity for the new 2008 Bristol 10k run and the Reebok Bristol Half Marathon for 2007 and 2008. This is a fantastic opportunity to raise public awareness of the vital work of children’s hospices all over the UK, and we are really looking forward to being a part of this terrific event.”

Volunteers needed to help with the Bristol 10k race

A call for volunteers to help marshal Bristol’s first-ever 10km race has been issued by event organisers, Bristol City Council and the two official race charities, Penny Brohn Cancer Care and Association of Children’s Hospices (ACH).

To register as a volunteer please:
e-mail volunteer@pennybrohn.org (tel 01275 370073) or tracy@childhospice.org.uk (tel 0117 9897825) as soon as you can.

The race is set to take place on the May Bank Holiday Monday, May 5 at 9.30 am. And volunteers are needed from 8 am until approx 1 pm for a 5 hour shift. Marshalling the route, keeping access points clear, helping and directing spectators to view points and handing out bottles of water, medals and goodie bags to runners are among the many tasks volunteers are asked to cover.

Up to 300 volunteers are needed on the day. Volunteers should be aged over 18 (although we are also interested in organised groups of younger people) and will need to attend a briefing session at 8am on the morning of the race.

“Volunteers are a key element to ensuring the race day is a success,” says Georgette Van Hoof, the city council’s race director. “Without the support of local people coming forward – major events like the 10km simply couldn’t happen. Bristol has an excellent reputation for well-organised events – and it’s very often thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who are working away, behind-the-scenes making sure everything runs smoothly.”

Kirsty McLatchie of Penny Brohn Cancer Care, said: “Volunteers have a crucial role to play – not only in helping out on the day – but also in supporting our work. We already have hundreds of people running in the race to raise valuable funds to help people with cancer and their loved ones. I hope people feel able to give up a morning, come forward and be apart of the race day.

Tracy Tait of the Association of Children’s Hospices, added: “Bristol’s first-ever 10km is bound to be a special event – and by volunteering to help out, people can be part of the city’s racing history. ACH relies on the good will of volunteers and fully appreciates the enormous contribution volunteers make. So I would urge anyone who would like to know more about what we do and how to get involved in our work to consider being a race-day volunteer.”
