Reebok Bristol Half Marathon 2008
Official Charities

The Reebok Bristol Half Marathon has three official race charities, one local, one national and one international. Official status gives a charity the opportunity to promote their work through the race and encourage runners and their supporters to raise money for a worthy cause.

An estimated £1million pounds is raised for charity each year but our official charities do not receive income from the race organisers so we would encourage runners to add to their experience of running the Reebok Bristol Half Marathon by offering to support one of these very worthy causes.

The official charities for 2008 are:

The Association of Children's Hospices, St Peter's Hospice and COCO.

The Association of Children's Hospices

It’s every parent’s worst fear to be told their child will die before them. But for an estimated 20,000 families across the UK this is a reality. In most cases full-time care falls to the parents – 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Not surprisingly the whole family is under huge emotional, physical and financial strain.

Children’s hospice services offer a lifeline to these families. They welcome the family for a break together in a home-from-home environment, or, if they prefer, in the comfort of their own home, sharing in the care of the child, providing essential respite from the 24 hour care routine. And, when the time comes, they can provide end of life care, helping the family and child to meet death with dignity and peace.

ACH is the voice of children’s hospice services in the UK. We work hard to ensure that every child has access to a children’s hospice that’s able to offer them the best possible care available. Please run for us so we can continue to help life-limited children and their families make the most of every precious moment.

Join the ACH running team: together we can ensure that children who won’t live to reach adulthood – and their families – continue to get help for every step of their journey.

“The Association of Children’s Hospices (ACH) is absolutely delighted to be chosen as the official national charity for the Reebok Bristol Half Marathon for 2007 and 2008. This is a fantastic opportunity to raise public awareness of the vital work of children’s hospices all over the UK, and we are really looking forward to being a part of this terrific event.”

St Peter's Hospice

St Peter’s Hospice began its work in Bristol thirty years ago. It started with just two community nurses in 1978 and quickly grew to meet the growing demands for specialised care and support for patients in Bristol with progressive disease, usually cancer. Since its inception, its services have always been free.

Three decades later, with over 200 medical staff, St Peter’s continues to be committed to improving the quality of life for patients in Bristol, North Somerset and South Glos, while extending support to their families. The hospice now provides care from teams of specialist nurses who visit patients in their homes and also from in-patient units and day hospices at its buildings in Knowle and Brentry. Last year alone we provided palliative care to 1,700 patients and bereavement and grief support to over 5,000 family members, including children.

We are only able to provide this care thanks to individuals and businesses in and around Bristol.

As part of our 30th anniversary celebrations, we are hoping to see significant growth in our ‘Hospice at Home’ service. We provide 24 hour nursing support to patients and their carers at home during the last week of life. This service allows patients to choose to die in their own home when admission to hospital or hospice might otherwise be needed. Understandably, this service is in great demand. We hope to raise £100,000 over the next twelve months in order to recruit three new nurses to the Hospice at Home team. This investment would mean that an additional thirty patients would receive our care in 2008.

COCO

COCO helps children across the world to access better health and education. The charity was founded in 1998 by former World 1500m and Mile record holder Steve Cram and as a result, we raise much of our money through sponsored runners in the UK and overseas. COCO has raised in excess of half a million pounds since 1998, funding projects in Bosnia, Romania, Malawi, Tanzania, India, Thailand and South Africa.

We pride ourselves on being a small charity that is attentive to the needs and wishes of both our supporters and the children we support financially. Transparency and accountability are both very important to us, so we can tell you where every penny goes.

Thanks to support from COCO, children’s voices are starting to be heard and their rights to an education and basic health care are being realised. COCO is currently focussing on the plight of street children in Sub-Saharan Africa, helping them to attend school and teaching them how to look after their own health. With your help we can continue this work and reach even more children

By running the Bristol Half Marathon and raising just £150 you can help COCO to give children a new start in life, take them away from the dangers of life on the streets, feed, clothe and educate them. Basically you will give them what every child should be entitled to, a happy healthy childhood.”
