Bristol Half Marathon - Official Charities
St Peter’s Hospice began its work in Bristol thirty years ago. It started with just two community nurses in 1978 and quickly grew to meet the growing demands for specialised care and support for patients in Bristol with progressive disease, usually cancer. Since its inception, its services have always been free.
Three decades later, with over 200 medical staff, St Peter’s continues to be committed to improving the quality of life for patients in Bristol, North Somerset and South Glos, while extending support to their families. The hospice now provides care from teams of specialist nurses who visit patients in their homes and also from in-patient units and day hospices at its buildings in Knowle and Brentry. Last year alone we provided palliative care to 1,700 patients and bereavement and grief support to over 5,000 family members, including children.
We are only able to provide this care thanks to individuals and businesses in and around Bristol.
As part of our 30th anniversary celebrations, we are hoping to see significant growth in our ‘Hospice at Home’ service. We provide 24 hour nursing support to patients and their carers at home during the last week of life. This service allows patients to choose to die in their own home when admission to hospital or hospice might otherwise be needed. Understandably, this service is in great demand. We hope to raise £100,000 over the next twelve months in order to recruit three new nurses to the Hospice at Home team. This investment would mean that an additional thirty patients would receive our care in 2008.
