Volunteers needed for Bristol 10km race

A call for volunteers to help marshal Bristol’s first-ever 10km race has been issued by event organisers, Bristol City Council and the two official race charities, Penny Brohn Cancer Care and Association of Children’s Hospices (ACH).

To register as a volunteer please:
e-mail volunteer@pennybrohn.org (tel 01275 370073) or tracy@childhospice.org.uk (tel 0117 9897825) as soon as you can.

The race is set to take place on the May Bank Holiday Monday, May 5 at 9.30 am. And volunteers are needed from 8 am until approx 1 pm for a 5 hour shift. Marshalling the route, keeping access points clear, helping and directing spectators to view points and handing out bottles of water, medals and goodie bags to runners are among the many tasks volunteers are asked to cover.

Up to 300 volunteers are needed on the day. Volunteers should be aged over 18 (although we are also interested in organised groups of younger people) and will need to attend a briefing session at 8am on the morning of the race.

“Volunteers are a key element to ensuring the race day is a success,” says Georgette Van Hoof, the city council’s race director. “Without the support of local people coming forward – major events like the 10km simply couldn’t happen. Bristol has an excellent reputation for well-organised events – and it’s very often thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who are working away, behind-the-scenes making sure everything runs smoothly.”

Kirsty McLatchie of Penny Brohn Cancer Care, said: “Volunteers have a crucial role to play – not only in helping out on the day – but also in supporting our work. We already have hundreds of people running in the race to raise valuable funds to help people with cancer and their loved ones. I hope people feel able to give up a morning, come forward and be apart of the race day.

Tracy Tait of Association of Children’s Hospices, added: “Bristol’s first-ever 10km is bound to be a special event – and by volunteering to help out, people can be part of the city’s racing history. ACH relies on the good will of volunteers and fully appreciates the enormous contribution volunteers make. So I would urge anyone who would like to know more about what we do and how to get involved in our work to consider being a race-day volunteer.”

Penny Brohn Cancer Care
Penny Brohn Cancer Care provides complementary care (The Bristol Approach) to people with cancer, and their loved ones. Working alongside medical treatment, this complementary approach can transform lives – giving people practical tools to improve their daily quality of life and helping to take the fear out of cancer.

Association of Children’s Hospices
ACH is the voice of children’s hospice services in the UK. We work hard to ensure that every child has access to a children’s hospice that’s able to offer them the best possible care available. We aim to help life-limited children and their families make the most of every precious moment.
